Waltham High School Play – The Curious Incident Of The Dog in the Night-Time

  The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time by Mark Haddon was performed in Waltham Highschool and directed by Jesse Bastarache. The main theme of the play is fear, the world is a dangerous place in the eyes of Christopher (the main character), which has to due to his ability to control his daily life. Although the play had intriguing special effects and superb acting, it had some blunders such as the lack of sentiment between Christopher and his Mother as well as an unnecessary ending.

  When I read The Curious The Curious Incident In The Dog Of The Night-Time I felt something different between Christopher and his Mother than what was portrayed in the play. In the novel, Christopher seemed more helpless and it felt as if there was a connection between Mother and son. The acting between the two characters simply didn’t feel real enough. In regard to the ending, it seemed as if it wasn’t needed that much. The play was good enough on its own without the part where Christopher solves math problems to the audience. I didn’t pay to be given a math lesson.

  On the other hand, the portrayal of the autistic main character was done pretty well. Nick Tobin, who’s on the spectrum himself told me, “The play portrayed autistic people very well. The way he (Christopher) does numbers in his head is similar to the way I do numbers in my head.” And I think the autism of the main character was significant to the meaning of the play since it gave an insight into the life of a divergent person.

  For the most part, the play was amazing and enjoyable but it wasn’t perfect, and I didn’t expect perfection. Plays are a great opportunity for students in Waltham High School to express their creative side. And it seemed as if they put a lot of hard work into making it great.
