Imprisoned Orcas

Imprisoned Orcas

Rachel McLaughlin, Journalist

Orca whales are known as the rulers of the sea. They are apex predators, meaning they have no natural predators. Orcas value their family more than most other animals, if not all. They are the only species in the world where both female and male offspring stay with their mother and immediate family forever. They are also amongst the most intelligent marine animals, which is why they are a main target for marine parks such as Sea World.

“In 1970, over 90 orcas were stalked and herded into a three-acre net by deafening explosives, speedboats, and airplanes at Puget Sound, a deep inlet of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Washington.” This led to a lifetime of capturing and confinement of orcas in marine parks around the world. In this process young calves are torn from their mothers never to see each other again and go through so much stress that most of them die before they are even taken to marine parks. Wild orcas are meant to swim on average 40 miles a day, feel the ocean waves, hunt their own food, etc. They are very social animals that swim in packs and love talking to one another. In parks like Seaworld, orcas live in small pools roughly 170 feet long, with no socialization, or wave-like sensations for the orcas. It is literally torture for them and they have to spend their whole lives like that. Sea World’s parking lots are bigger than the orca pools. Wild orcas do not hurt humans, but captured orcas do. There have been a number of human deaths caused by captured orcas because they go stir crazy, and yet still nothing has changed.

There are a number of ways to help. Never support Sea World or any marine animal park that treats their animals like Sea World. Participate by signing online petitions, one is linked below. Advocate for the ethical care of the current captured orcas in small pools of chemically treated water be put in a seaside sanctuary where they can experience interaction with other marine life and experience life in the ocean like they were meant to. Orcas are counting on humans to end the capturing and give the already captured a life back in the ocean.
