Introducing the 2022 Girls and Boys Tennis Teams.

Cassandra Doyle, Staff Writer

Spring sports are starting up again at Waltham High School! Along with lacrosse and softball we are also excited to see the beginning of the tennis season on April 8th.  This year there are 25 boys and 18 girls playing tennis on their respective teams.  The teams are diligently working to prepare for their games, they practice everyday after school at Brandeis University.

One of the most important things for them is teambuilding. Since tennis is played either solo (against 1 other person) or in pairs (2 against 2), players may not end up talking with players from other courts. To increase team spirit and camaraderie the captains are working to include everyone in team games. The team plays group games and bonds over snacks. “It takes a special group of people to make a sport enjoyable” says Captain Shamus Pilette.  The players this year certainly fit that criteria. This year there was also an increase in interest for the tennis teams, especially for the girls team. With that increase in interest many people were not able to make the team.  If you did not make the team you can still play on your own time. “I think it would be great if we got people who didn’t make the team to still enjoy tennis,” says Captain Elisabeth Shepherd

This year the coaches are Coach Tenenholtz and Coach Shepard. We were able to speak with Coach Tenenholtz who is exhilarated about this season. “I’m excited to coach the kids and teach more,” he says. Tenenholtz is a high energy, very involved coach who wants the best for his players. He is also a large promotor of the student run boys tennis team Instagram: @walthamboysvarsitytennis. Be sure to also check out the girls tennis Instagram @whs.girls.tennis.2022.

Be sure to check out the teams at their games and try out next year. The schedule is flexible and there is no experience necessary. Tennis is meant to be enjoyable and build community, which is why you should attend games. Remember, as Coach Tennenholtz says “The season starts April 8th!”
